We gave Gary a little time to find his feet before subjecting him to our "Get to Know" questions - and here's what he said!
Who are you?
I’m Gary Martin and I recently joined Titan as Chief Revenue Officer, but my association with Matt and the Titan business goes back to day one. I worked with Matt when the Titan project kicked off twenty years ago so I've got a lot of affection for the business and the incredible journey it's been on since then!
Outside of business, I'm a Newcastle boy who's spent the last 25 years in Surry Hills in Sydney; most of them with my lovely wife Rebecca and, other than a couple of years in Silicon Valley, I've been in Australia my whole life - there's no place like home.
I started working life in a truck and tractor business, moved into the software side of things when CD ROMS were all the rage and have spent many happy years combining software and automotive ever since.
What do you do?
I identify and pursue growth opportunities for Titan. That includes each of the regions we operate in (without forgetting our domestic roots) and will be best achieved in partnership with our customers.
What do you love most about your profession?
I love the continual change in automotive. It's an ever-evolving industry and that means there's always interesting challenges to take on.
I'll admit to being a bit of a car buff as well. I think that comes from my dad telling me that we were the "Martin" in "Aston Martin" (we're not - but it also explains why our dog was called "Aston"!).
I finally got the chance to live out that dream a little when I bought a 2006 V8 Vantage a few years ago. Now that's a car!
What do you most like about working for Titan?
Everybody cares about doing the right thing - and that's priceless.
What’s the best piece of advice you have for anyone in your profession?
Listen first and keep learning.
Can you share a recent success story that really made your day?
Can I say managing to coordinate a one week holiday with my wife next week? We're both pretty busy, so this felt like a win.
What is your superpower?
I think it's helping others to be the best they can be. I get enormous satisfaction when I see others succeed.
What are we likely to find you doing outside work?
God, this is going to sound a bit boring but the thing that comes to mind is mowing the paddocks on a property we have a couple hours north of Sydney. That's my meditation I guess, driving the tractor around tidying the place up.
Tell us a book we should read, a film we should watch, and a podcast we should listen to.
Film – any of the John Wick series. Won't be for everyone but it's mindless relaxation for me.
Book – "Multipliers" by Liz Wiseman. It's about how good leadership makes everyone smarter (and vice versa).
Podcast – I'm just about to start listening to "Diary of a CEO" with Steven Bartlett. The Jimmy Carr episode is the first one I'm going to duck into - he's an interesting bloke.
In three words, sum up what makes a great team.
Connected, aligned, and DRIVEN (just to stay on brand and mention our newsletter!)
Thanks Gary!
