After years spent across Toyota, Mazda and large multi-site dealer groups, Emma now applies that experience to helping dealers find lasting value in their DMS decisions.
To find out a little more about her we asked our "Get to know..." questions and here’s what she said!
Who are you?
I’m Emma Hughes, and I’m based on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne. I’m a mum to two boys - one 16 and one 13 - plus a six-month-old puppy, which makes it a nice busy household.
I’ve moved around a bit over the years… Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, then back to Melbourne - so a bit of a gypsy phase in my younger years, but all great experiences. My father was in the automotive industry so I've always felt connected to it in one form or another.
What do you do?
I’m Titan’s Business Development Manager for VIC, SA, WA and TAS. At its core, my role is about relationships - genuine connection, consistency and understanding what’s happening inside each dealership so I can come to the table with appropriate solutions.
What do you love most about your profession?
I'm sure this won't be a unique answer but it's the people. Every dealership and every individual brings a different personality and a different story. I love building relationships, even if they start with a flat “no thanks”.
I’m ok with rejection. Sales teaches you that early but the fun is in listening carefully and then trying to turn a “not interested” into something positive over time. Sometimes it takes a year, sometimes two but when that connection comes I find it really rewarding.
What do you most like about working for Titan?
No surprises here either - the people at Titan are amazing. From day one, everyone has been helpful, open and genuinely supportive.
Shane [McMillan] has been an incredible source of knowledge (I’m convinced he wears about 5 hats in here). Everyone I've met has been so willing to help. It makes settling in that much easier when you’re surrounded by people who want you to succeed.
What’s the best piece of advice you have for anyone in your profession?
Be persistent. Stick with it.
Set small goals that build toward the big ones, and be realistic. Nothing happens overnight. It takes time to learn, time to build trust, and time to see results.
And never stop learning, that's another useful one
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
An actress, but that dream died with my first time on stage as a kid when I spilt a drink and one of the other actors slipped on it and fell. I still managed to get my lines out but that was the point I knew it wasn't going to be for me!
What is your superpower?
Positivity. I’m a people person through and through. I don’t surround myself with negativity, and I try to bring positive energy into every conversation.
What are we likely to find you doing outside work?
Driving my kids around - I’m basically a taxi service!
When I get time for myself, I love being outdoors: running, hiking, camping… anything away from screens and steering wheels. After a week on the road or behind the computer, being outside is my reset button.
Can you share a recent success story that really made your day?
My younger son recently made the Next Gen St Kilda AFL development squad. He’s incredibly sporty and works so hard, so seeing him achieve something he’s dreamed about - and knowing how much effort he’s put in - was one of those proud mum moments.
It’s not work-related, but it absolutely made my week.
Tell us a book we should read, a film we should watch, and a podcast we should listen to.
Book: "Me" by Elton John - his autobiography. A brilliant read and a pretty incredible life.
Film: "The Lost Boys" - an ’80s vampire classic with Kiefer Sutherland. I must just about know it word-for-word at this point.
Podcast: "Kill List" - a true-crime series that’s disturbing, fascinating, and exactly my kind of thing.
In three words, sum up what makes a great team.
Commitment, motivation, and discipline.
Thanks Emma!
